Friday Night Blitz ’26: Week 3
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Another Week of action on the High School Football Fields on the Western Slope and across the state, and at this point of the season things go from trends to truths.
The Grand Junction Tigers defeated the Fruita Monument Wildcats 42-7 at Stocker Stadium in the latest matchup of the rivalry. Grand Junction scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, including a punt return touchdown by Marcus Martinez and a passing interception by Preston Fife that set up another score. Quarterback Andrew Neese added a touchdown on a keeper as Grand Junction’s defense held Fruita Monument to one score. Fruita Monument won last season’s meeting 10-7, but Grand Junction has now won its largest margin of victory over Fruita Monument since 2011, according to the team.
The Mountain Vista Golden Eagles defeated the Montrose Red Hawks 40-33. Montrose led 27-25 after a Lincoln Jones run set up a Cade Saunders quarterback keeper for a touchdown. Mountain Vista responded in the fourth quarter, with Hudson Modrzewski scoring to put the Golden Eagles ahead 33-32. Jones answered for Montrose, and Brody Callister’s score put Mountain Vista back on top with about a minute remaining. On the final play, Saunders was hit as he threw a pass that fell incomplete, ending the game.
The Plateau Valley Cowboys earned their first tally in the win collum in a dominant victory over the Gilpin County Eagles. Both squads came into the matchup at 0-2, but the Cowboys came out of the gate hot, taking a 12-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Multiple touchdowns by Austin Grundy and Vance Sheffield powered an explosive ground game early to help the Cowboys cruise to a 48-20 win.
The Grand Valley Cardinals are still in search of their first win of the year after a 44-6 loss to the Platte Canyon Huskies in their home opener. The Cards get the week off next week before hosting the red-hot Olathe Pirates in their first league match of the year.
